Chess Is a Joke — Variant Rules

Defensive publication • Version 1.0 • Last updated:
Abstract. This variant extends classical chess to a 9×9 board and adds a non-capturing piece, the Joker, whose power is to freeze nearby enemy pieces. It also introduces a pawn mechanic called En Croissant (a freeze-based cousin of en passant). The purpose of this page is to publicly disclose and dedicate these mechanics so they constitute prior art.

2.3 Movement

Piece values used solely for “highest piece wins” freezing: Q=9, R=5, B=3, N=3, P=1, Joker=0. (King excluded.)

3) En Croissant (pawn special)

En Croissant is a freeze-based response available when enemy pawns advance in adjacent files.

6) Example situations (text)

Joker retargeting: Joker sits next to an enemy rook (freezes rook). An enemy queen moves next to the Joker as well. The freeze switches to the queen immediately; the rook unfreezes.
Joker leaves: Joker steps away; the last frozen queen remains frozen for one additional friendly turn and then unfreezes.
Queen captured by king: A queen that is frozen and undefended can be captured by the enemy king because the queen exerts no control while frozen.
En Croissant: White and Black pawns in adjacent files have both double-stepped earlier. Black advances one to become side-by-side. On White’s very next move, White steps diagonally “behind” into Black’s file; Black’s pawn is frozen for its next turn.
